Power, Peace & Politics

People often say, fight for what you believe in, fight for what you love, and for love. However, there seems to be a slightly contradicting message in these words. After all, fighting and war, and peace and love, are opposites in meaning.

Is war always bad? Is love always good? Is it wrong to fight for what we believe in, if it means we hurt others in the process? And of the same branch, is it wrong to fight for love, or something we love, if it means generating wars?

A example of a battle that currently is in effect is the American-Iraqi war. Am I a shameful American for admitting I have deep sympathy for those in the middle east? Hearing from some of the innocents there makes me feel such strong empathy. Their lives are in turmoil, bombings and gunfire are daily routines, and death numbers are appalling. We may be the other side of this war, but for the most part, we know little of what the war has brought upon them. While I do think there is much corruption in the middle east, who is to say, that we are not corrupted ourselves.

I have heard many people talk of president Bush as if he is the devil himself, simply because he initiated this war. A position of power, such as president though, will only ever be filled by a human being. A mere mortal. As humans, we all make mistakes, and when facing a critical decision, we do not, perhaps, always decide correctly. The difference is when those who are in power make errors in decision, the ramifications are far greater.

Power is like a double-edged sword, it can be abused, as well as, a fundamental aide in working for the greater good and for peace. Why is it though, that it seems people of power start more wars, than create peace?

Could it be that those who crave power, may often also crave fame and control, often also traits of a someone who is self-centered. After all, fame and power go hand in hand, and anyone who has no desires for fame, will most likely avoid placing themselves in position of power. And I don't imagine you can be a person who strongly hates controversy and nonetheless, run for president or another position of power. After all, politics are anything but harmonious. But it is those who are by nature and desire, peaceful, who would perhaps be most passionate and effective in obtaining peace on a larger scale.

Why though, would someone who truly seeks or lives in peace want to fight for a powerful position? Not only is fighting contradictory to the peaceful nature, but a political career or position of power will certainly disrupt their personal peace and place them in an environment of controversy and crisis.

Through all this talk of power though, I'm confess I am undecided on whether anyone should have control over another being's life? Are we not all human, who are any of us to play God and decide what another should do, or even whether one should live or die?

I have so many questions, and I feel, so few answers. I will admit that this topic is reaching beyond my capability in understanding, and perhaps I only sound flibbertigibbety speaking and sharing thoughts on it. However, I know that the best way to make sense of anything I don't understand is to think and talk about it. Perhaps you can enlighten me some with your own ideas, opinions and thoughts...

Additional questions that I would love to hear your opinions on: Do you believe under the right rule, with the right leaders instated, that world peace, or at least peace in country, is possible? Is any one of us truly worthy and deserving of immense power or control over a mass number of other people? Do you believe that at times that our government, and those who are in control, harm more than they help?

I love your blog, and what a fantastic quote here:

I think when the term 'fight' is applied in this sense, it's really a euphemism for passion - those who are peaceful people will not use aggressive tactics in their fight to make positive changes, rather they'll try to enlighten everyone with an alternate view and ensure that it prevails over the current model of thinking.

People that do fight in the literal sense to get hold of a powerful position using force however, show their true colours from the outset. These people get results, but I can't help but feel that a lot of these people are in it for their own glory rather then to benefit others.

I think one person can certainly inspire a nation to adopt a more peaceful view, but it's up to the masses to carry out that belief and I think the present global situation has scared people. They'd rather be armed with visible force as it puts them in a visibly stronger position rather than adopt a peaceful approach which makes them feel vulnerable to attack.

I believe there has to be some form of government in place in a society to maintain order. The questions of how much power must be given to the government, and if the government in place is actually doing the right thing are questions that must constantly be asked. And love, i think, is the only thing worth fighting for!

As for the heels, if you're comfy in them, rock them! I personally think they look very sexy on a woman.

Beautifully written and I think about such things all the time ... but always end up being more confused.... In my opinion politics and peace do not exactly go hand in hand, just a contradiction ....politics are both what cause and prevent wars... Politics will always be corrupted and it pointing fingers at each other is just silly ...

Wow what a blog post hun.

There are a multitude of running thoughts and questions asked that i am unsure of where to start.

As lovely as the idea of utopic earth can prevail reality makes clear that this can never be the case. There are so much variables between the human race, take into account the cosmos and environment and it becomes far too much to handle.

As someone whom understands the conflicts between the Americans and Iraqis it is devastating to see the present outcome occur. I am very empathetic to anyones suffering which is why i volunteer with the mentally disabled and elderly aswell as visit orphanages to assist and even thinking in this brief moment about the hardships they are facing is tearing at my heart strings.

Sorry i've digressed lol. I cannot answer your questions without a continuing diatribe as i believe it is the most constructive and alluring way to discuss such deeply evocative thoughts. :)

This is beautiful Susanna :)

Great thoughts!

I think the craving for power, is the base of war!

You should fight for what you belief, but you can do it in a more respectful way (then killing or hurting others).

1st these photos are stunnnnnning.

so classy.

2nd your comment was out of this world. i feel so blessed. ah a older sister. i love being an older sister--- my sister is one of my best friends. you inspire me every.single.day. what to say ? what to say ? every word is drawn into my heart...

3rd WOW I can't even get started on the government here in South Africa. It is corrupt beyond belief. Presidents stuck in rape trials...ministers taking secret trips with tax payers money. It is seriously insane. To think that Africa would ever have peace ? I don't know. I would LOVE to see it but peace stems from people... and if people aren't empowered and don't know how to improve there own lives ( instead of 1st world countries utter attempt to provide them with material basics ) nothing will change. It all starts with educating the people. They have to self-sustain... so without that peace is a faraway dream...families can't even get along in their households due to their own problems...so peace of a nation. its scary...but i don't think its fully possible. And with government only looking out for themselves and not there people...well then... the cycle perpetuates.

sorry for being negative nancy!!! ( SO NOT ME) I just have strong beliefs on this. After being in Africa for almost 4 years and working in Social Work...I've seen A LOT and its scary.

WELL MY LOVE. I hope you're having a splendid day.

THANKS a million for your AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING posts.

This is deep and it's gonna be hard to put into words what i feel...
i will just start by answering to one of your questions:'is war always bad, is love always good?'
this has really draw my attention because for me there is a strong connection between these two...
as far as i'm concerned it's something like there is no love without war and no war without love!
hmmm...my english doesn't help me that much!
what i am trying to say though, is the fact that if it wasn't something to fight for, the world would have been 'too simple' to live in and let's be honest... this feeling called love is quite the same because it cannot be simple, you have to always 'fight' for it!
and this word 'fight'...is not a simple word as well...it includes so many acts, feelings...is like a storm which doesn't always bring good things, it can turn everything into a complete disaster!

the idea is that we all fight for something, we all expect for world peace, no political conflicts, but somehow we lose a very important aspect from our sight and we end up doing the same things which will never bring us close to peace!

sad, but too much pride going on!
i still hope that we will change something, that we will have the power to judge less, to see this awful war coming to an end!

thank you for sharing your thoughts...it means a lot for me to change opinions with clever people like you...i learn everyday how to be a better me from those who trully show something different in this world!

i like your blog a lot.

wars are inevitable.
i dont think religion is the only reason, as many people claim.
without religion there would be no wars.
simply not true i think.

The power you're referring to in your post is mainly one dimensional and directional power. There are other kinds of power that is not necessarily directional or transactional but rather transformational. The traditional concept of power (directional) is something that we (most of us) cannot reach or posses but transformational power exists in everyone. That power is what I would like to call 'people power'. The collective transformational power coming from all of us, the normal folks, can create a huge impact. I'm sure you can write a doctorate thesis on this subject.

As for Bush.. I was listening to an interview with a famous American author who recently published a book on the American Administration. What I heard was utterly appalling. One of the most chilling things I heard was how interested G Bush was in the number of death. How many enemies the troops killed. he also pointed out how his defense guys in his administration are so frustrated because of that (the fact that he dose not understand the concept of war).. It's tragic. He is not only an incompetent president but a total idiot.
