There's More Charm In Snail Mail

Today I am writing to VSO with a few questions about volunteering with them for a year. VSO is the world’s leading independent, international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries.

And writing to VSO, made me ponder writing letters in general. In my opinion, there is no charm in text messaging in ungrammatical abbreviations, and when friends are far away, I much rather pour over a heartfelt letter than shoot out an email.

Letters are yes, arguably slower, and will eat up more time in one's schedule than say, an email or a text message, but it is the time one gives a warm letter that makes them so much more endearing. Letters, after all, can be most revealing of it's author, imparting with the receiver a little key to the writer's heart.

I do adore, especially, when a letter I receive includes quirky little doodles to illustrate thoughts and words. And to hold your sent photos in your hand, is surely more magical than downloading them from an email attachment.

And when one's hand inevitably begins to cramp from embracing a pen and inking paper, there's always a typewriter which provides rhythmic and comforting little notes of click-click.

A rule of thumb: letters are best stuffed with stickers, pictures, and little memorabilia that slips perfectly into a brown envelope.

Perhaps I'm an 18 year old, oddly fixed in old fashioned methods, but letters are magic to me, warming me like a cup of tea.

And packages delivered to one's doorstep is always lovely... though I've never had a cat arrive on my doorstep (as in the above Polaroid), but perhaps, someone will send me one!

Now, might I ask you, what is your verdict on written communication? Do letters warm your heart, or would you prefer the speed of a text message or email?

especially when I live on the other side of the world. i really do appreciate old-fashioned mail.

i jump for joy when i have post.
it means someone took that little extra bit to personally construct something for you.

love it.

i myself don't write enough cards but definately still post through snail mail...

Oooh dear Susanna! You just made my day! <3
Everything about this post is just divine...
Although i am a little older (24) i absolutely agree with you about writing letters and being a little old fashioned. But you know what? I LOVE being old fashioned and i am damn proud of it. Not everything in this world has to be in the quickest way possible. Let's start pay real attention to the things we do and we certainly pay more attention when writing a letter than when typing an email.

You're most definitely my favourite blogger, you're amazing and so wise for your age. really!

I just love receiving written letters, as you said, it feels special when you get something you know someone put a bit of effort in, not like an ordinary e-mail. I have to admit that I rarely write written letters anymore, most of the time because I want things to arrive as soon as possible, but still... For some occasions, like birthdays or Christmas cards, I do take the time to write my cards! Love that I'm not the only one thinking that!

I always just assume everyone knows to click. Oops. Yeah you can click all of my pictures and they will enlarge to full size. :)

So glad you liked it. I too want to don a mask and some "slick leather" ahhhhh. *sigh, perfect for cooler weather (whenever it decides to show its face in Sunny Miami!!...) xx

No it's OK. I've had the questions from other too I think (about wanting to see the photos larger) so hopefully they will click them??

Hope you're weekend is going well. And of course, for your sweet comments!!

I love writing letters because you can add little random things in the envelope like necklaces, glitter, crystals

I linked you to my blog xxx

I love letters in the mail - so much more special and personal then an electronic communication. I guess the time and the care that was put into crafting the letter is what I appreciate most of all - and there's no nicer tone then the click-clack of the typewriter

how very kind of you : )

i am DEFINITELY for letters.
i wrote one on friday thanking my teacher for something they did.

manners are SO important
i am pro etiquette
I ALWAYS write thank you letters

my family is very old fashioned so i was brought up with many manners considered insignificant
but when i do something not done nowadays for an older person - they are truly touched.

KEEP WRITING!!

great post : )

I am forever writing letters to people and love getting them in return.
I think there is nothing better to hearing the postman arrive and seeing a letter or two waiting.

your blog is a diamond among many rocks.
Truly!
I also prefer written. You can keep them forever, and it's always a great surprise receiving something in your mailbox that doesn't rhyme with hills.

I definitely agree about writing and receiving mail through "snail mail." The thought of receiving packages or letters through the mail reminds me of that one part in the song "Favorite Things" from the Sound of Music: "brown paper packages tied up with strings." I wish people did that more often.

sadly i don't know where the picture of the girl on the car is originally from. i love it too.

yeah sure i would like for you to link me. Thanks! =) i am so completely new to this process, i'm still trying to figure out how to fix up my page. hehehe.

Ya, gone are the days... That's why I have personalized stationery made and buy beautiful pens engraved with my name. These beautiful things coax me to let go of the email and take out that pale pink sheet and write on it, slowly, watching my hand trace letters with a silver pen.

Love your blog for your thoughts and the photographs. Will add you to my blogroll!
