"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

When I first discovered the title quote for this entry, its brutal truth felt like a punch to the gut. We often believe that as long as we, ourselves, don't act wrongly, we are exemplary citizens. There is a misconception among some that in order to avoid acting immorally, we must remove ourselves from all wrongdoing and crime. Perhaps though, the key is not that we should distance ourselves from the cruel injustice experienced in the world, but that we should intercept it.

When we do not act against injustice, when we do not stand up against crime, when we do not offer aide to the helpless, we allow evil to continue to prevail. This is not to say we must or should feel the guilt of every crime in existence, no human can be expected to prevent all evil, however we can all exercise what capabilities we have to seek justice for others.

Martin Luther King Jr. wisely said, "True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice." Complete world peace is unlikely, and God is the only who can truly serve justice to all, but justice and peace in a family, a community, peace between two countries, and additional accomplishments of justice, are not impossible to achieve.

Recently I was handed a folded pamphlet, the front flap reading, "Speak justice, the language that can change the world." Justice is indeed like learning a language, practice is necessary in order to achieve fluency. One would expect frustrations and challenges upon learning a new language, and justice is no different. You must first dare to struggle, before you can dare to win...

Are there any inciendents of injustice that you have experienced first hand? Do you witness much injustice in your community? When, if ever, have you worked to prevent injustice? Other thoughs on justice?

another beautiful post by a beautiful person inside and out,i have seen alot of injustice happenings inparticular a minor friend of mine was murdered by a gang member because he was of a homosexual orientation and i wish i were there to prevent that such thing, now that i know that this stuff realy happens in my atmosphere i will; try my best to help- people who are GLBT because we as humans should not come to cruel extents to destroy things we dont believe are right! :( i hope that people learn from there mistakes and try to do better next time, because standing by and letting innocent people and things be damaged is not something our world can endure

Dear S-C : great post! Making me think & helping the blogosphere examine their consciousness :)

Living abroad opens your eyes to so many opinions; some good, some bad that other cultures have of the one I am from. I have had a few strange things said to me but it comes from people being ignorant. If Ignorance grows then Justice will never prevail if we as humans do not learn how to get along with each other. And so I hearld education and action as the fore-runners of achieving justice. And I've learned to do something or say something as it could make all the difference! Happy Thanksgiving :)

you've got to speak up, cause if you don't think of all the others who don't. we have the right to speech
and that's more than others have.

I remember reading a case study regarding helping behaviour in people when I was studying psych a few years ago...a woman was murdered outside and apartment complex, something like 27 people heard something and nobody did anything. Turns out the more people there are, the less any are inclined to actually help because we don't feel the full weight of responsiblity...we should.

Injustice is everywhere and we are unable to solve it or just the simple act of trying to change it!
i wasn't in the position to suffer from serious injustices, but i felt how people around me were in this position of being treated real bad without being guilty or without doing anything bad...
it's reality...
i always try to keep myself away from 'injustice' my soul!

great post,i am happy i can read my fav blogs again:)

This quote always makes me cry. As it is so true..... :( I love the photos you have to go along with it. You know I ALWAYS do!! "Miss on a whim and her great posts" here. :)

Thank you :) I wanted to wear the boots so bad, I figured they kinda went with the sweater (since it's sleeveless) ohhh I still can't get over the fact that I only paid $8.50 for them and brand new, too!

Every time I watch Napoleon Dynamite, I see something new and funny to laugh at. I love them, for just being themselves. :)

I'm sorry to hear you and your sister are both under the weather. :( Drink lots of fluids. Tea and soup always help me. And add lots of lemon in!! ♥ I would send you some of my sweet potatoes with marshmallows if I could, I made some tonight.... and pumpkin soup. Aw, if only I could air mail it all to you both right now... <3

I am so full I can hardly move. So I thought it the perfect time to reply back to my comments. :D Have a lovely evening with your sister; talk laugh and watch some fun movies.

All my best!

I love this quote. There is another quote I love that JFK used to cite frequently:

The hottest place in hell is reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, strive to maintain their neutrality.

I hate injustices.

But I bet it feels good to know that you are making the world a better place one blog post at a time by making people think and having people realize what's going on in the world around us.

S-C.. you challenge me too much sometimes.. not saying you should stop. Life is never fair and injustice everywhere. Can't be bogged down by that. That's not to say I try to ignore all those... it's just that it's sometimes too much for one girl to handle. I guess we can all do something small to start with.

Having a little banner in my blog for anti-censorships is one example I suppose. I'm at this stage where I don't really want to get challenged but I will change no doubt and I'll revisit this post when that time comes...

copyright is difficult no matter what you do.. it's still a start if you have original source information. If you cant' find them you can easily replace with those you can. if that's what you want to do (publishing) then there's nothing to stop you really.

Hey S-C!

& Happy Thanksgiving to you too :O).

“We often believe that as long as we, ourselves, don't act wrongly, we are exemplary citizens.” ~ S-C

"Speak justice, the language that can change the world." Justice is indeed like learning a language, practice is necessary in order to achieve fluency.” ~ S-C

“You must first dare to struggle, before you can dare to win...~ S-C

SO true

The quote I could use (for me) with this post would be----
“It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lots of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope”
~ Robert Francis Kennedy

Most things that I face or have come up against in life, I basically USE to them for helping & shaping my personality. I realize there is injustice everywhere…but to learn from wrong doing instead of being bitter from it, gives me hope from day to day

Hope you’re cool :O)

Now just off the top of my head I can't think of any EXTREME events of injustice where my input was needed. Just the obvious stuff at school, you know, when a teacher gave unfair grades to someone. Then of course we spoke about it, maybe with another teacher, maybe to the teacher in question directly. And I do not think that I witness much injustice - I only have one friend whose mother prefers her younger sister and treats her [my friend] really unjustly. I won't go into details now here, but my mum has noticed this too and we try to defend my friend a bit always when her mother is unjust to her.

Great quote and query! As a lawyer, I did precious little to fight injustice since I was in commercial real estate law. But when I became an inner-city school teacher, I had to combat unfairness and injustice on a daily basis. It was often harrowing but ultimately rewarding.

Thanks for another beautiful post, S-C!

Hope your Turkey Day was as lovely as you are!

When I was an undergrad, we talked about this issue in one of my philosophy classes. I remember one student saying that he thought it was pointless to fight against injustice, because it will always be around. The more I think back on it, the more I wish I opened my mouth to disagree with him. I was to shy then. But I disagree, not necessarily because I naively think that we will one day reach a utopian state in which there is no injustice, but because the alternative to being hopeful and idealistic is to just give up. Cynicism doesn't require much out of people; it doesn't require energy, passion, love, etc.

Great post Susanna.

Injustice always gets on my nerves. I believe I've witnessed some examples before, but nothing too serious.
It's curious that you brought this up, just yesterday one of my Mom's aunts called and she asked to talk to me on the phone. She told me some quotes by Nelson Mandela that really inspired me.
Thank you for sharing your wise thoughts with us, SC!

What a brilliant post. I think that a lot of people sit idle while injustice occurs because of excuses such as 'I can't help, I'm too small' or 'it's not my problem.' There have been times when I've tried to intercept injustice only to be told that I shouldn't have bothered - that I should only look out for myself. It pains me to think that there are people perpetuating that egotistical mindset. It breeds a narrow, apathetic mind.

Tina :) said...

I have heard of so many cases in which someone was robbed or even killed, and witnesses did nothing to intercept the crime. I don't think one needs to put him or herself in danger, but to prevent some horrible from happening, one should say something. Standing by won't do any good. So many people out there need to speak up.
A girl my sister kind of knew was raped after school a few years ago. She said nothing, and did nothing - nobody knew about it except for a few girls she was friends with (the story spread to my sister, which was how she knew). Not even her parents knew. And the police? Definitely not. Not even the girl's best friends did anything! If I had known the girl, I definitely would have told her to say something. Being silent doesn't solve anything.

Such an inspirational post - you continue to amze me with your words.

♥Tina

These are beautiful images! They make me wish for a hot summer even more...

Hmmm i'm npot sure if it's injustice as such, but i do find it unfair how people percieve and treat each other based on image a lot of the time. For people to decide that you are a certain type of person based on face-value is quite disheartening.

Hope you had a happy thanksgiving!! xx

There is so much injustice in the world, I think, sadly, 99% of the population has and is increasingly developing an immunity or "numbness" to it.

If you think about it...to make justice in one situation and not another (and there will always be another injustice) that in itself is unjust. It's a sad truth, though I love your post very, very much. I'll probably be thinking about this whole justice/injustice thing for most of the evening and perhaps get back to you with more thoughts.
Hope you're well,
xx. mona
