I have dreams now, of desolate roads, and lonesome motels, ingrained on elapsed lands that offer shoddy rooms with cobwebs and lingering shadows, and anonymity to a drifting soul.

I think I’ll drive, all the way, to California, blaze the boundaries of my country, east coast to west. To drift through space and reminiscence, in the sleepy bones of my scruffy Volvo, its twin windshields, gritty and encrusted with remnants of northeast winters, framing the shifting terrain further on and following.

I crave the sweet delirium of insanity, of summer when heat crawls on exposed flesh, eating away the mind’s good sense. My need for a definite destination is absent; the stained maps of inked routes of purpose are to be abandoned. I wish only, to go.

The widespread dream of traveling is not unlike a castle in the sky. We gaze upon it, marveling at all its promise suspended in air, but we venture to guess that it is far above reaching: too pricey, too uncertain, not now, we’re busy, perhaps, later…

We consult maps; we consult costs, fishing with the tips our fingers in the lining of our pockets and tousled couch cushions for extra change to pay our way to the locations we daydream of.

Don’t go with a plan. Don’t go to be guided throughout on a tour. Don’t go to reside in a resort. Don’t go for luxury. Take a battered suitcase. Take any vehicle that runs. And take to the road.

Traveling is at perspective, merely a state of mind. We go for the prize of poignant liberty. We go when deadlines begin to chew away at our sanity, when our minds clatter into a dead end, when the days all look the same. We go to be aware of ourselves. We go for second sight, for vigor to flourish in our essence, for the emergence of character, for igniting light within.

Then there is the lack of limitations, the stretch and scribble of well worn roads. The curtains of undone hair, delicate like bicycle streamers in the wind, weaving through widemouthed windows, then snapping in the rapid shift of regions. The melodious breath of youth-forgotten freedom, fluently filling our lungs once again...a revival of our spirit, and of our soul.

How often do you travel? Do you wish to travel more, or to travel at all? Where do you dream of going? Why? If you travel, has traveling taught you anything, about the world, about yourself? Other thoughts?

Oh Susannah, how I've missed your posts! (oh dear, I started singing oh susannah...as I typed, how embarassing). Lovely post! I try to travel somewhere nice at least once a year, although this year I've been lucky to already have travelled twice, and hope to visit my sisters in London too...I wish I travelled more for sure! I love travelling, exploring new cultures, architecture, food, people...absorbing it all in.
xx
First of all: I've missed you!! (btw, how are you?)
So wonderful to read another one of your inspiring posts. It makes me want to get up and go. I think travelling is one of the best things a person can do for themselves. Apart from my recent trip home to Indonesia, I haven't travelled as much as I liked. Actually one of my goals this week is that I'm going to go out every day. It doesn't matter where, just out, because lately I've realized I've been spending too much time at home, and there's a lot to explore in this city alone.
roadtrip hurray! i actually have never been on a real one, just some minor ones within 5 hrs driving, but the idea of them is so inspiring. roadtrips are pretty much the only reason i want a car, so i don't have to bum around wondering when one of my car owning friends will invite me.
as for the tattoo. yea, there's always the worry that you will regret it. and right after i got my first one i was worried about it too. but you grow accustomed to having it on your body, it becomes a part of you like a mole or a scar (but prettier and more desirable at least to me). i also picked a career that is not very welcoming of tattoos, so i get them somewhere discreet.
the mom thing is only a bit of a problem. i don't even live on the same continent as my mom does now, so it's easy to hide such things. heheh. plus tattoo arguments can be easily refuted. "what are you going to do when you're 60 and have grand children?" well, possibly when i'm 60 not TOO many people will want to look at my naked body.
Hey S-C!!!!
...you've returned! I've changed Another Good Thought to : "A Puppydreams World" only...and have started another inspiration website, with some help from my team, called: Behind The Inspiration
http://behindtheinspiration.blogspot.com I've added your website!
I'm doing well....
"The widespread dream of traveling is not unlike a castle in the sky. We gaze upon it, marveling at all its promise suspended in air, but we venture to guess that it is far above reaching: too pricey, too uncertain, not now, we’re busy, perhaps, later…" S-C
True. I see this as an example of coming back into reality...even if you don't really want or desire, you have to...eventually.
I've been wanting to travel less, maybe due to the fact of the places I end up in during the course of the day. I dream of going to Paris, Chicago and NY....they appear to be cities of "spontatenous adventures".
...for me everyday is a new learning experience, so whether I travel or not...I've learn that LIFE is so much more enjoyed when you're relaxed and well aware :O).
Hi! I just discorvered your blog. Simply amazing. Keep on the good work.
Dear Susannah,
You are a welcome breath of fresh air for my day! It is great to have your posts to read once more.
I love travelling and seeing as I am now returned from my Austria adventure...things back in Ireland are good but I have that hankering to travel more...I've learned that people are so familiar the world over. We all feel the same things. We may express them through different languages & customs but humanity is so inextricably linked that I never feel too far from home when I see a friendly face. I've learned that you can say alot without having the language, you learn from others by observing and you can understand a race by looking at their history and knowing that everyone is striving to make themselves better than those before them.
Hope you have an enchanting week - Spring is coming!

I love your vocabulary and your choice of Bradford Gregory as the photographer for this post - his pictures are lovely!
As for travel, I don't get away much but my favorite places to go are simple: the beach or the mountains, as close by as New Jersey or Cape Cod, as far away as Costa Rica and Switzerland...
Fabulous post, as ever, darling S-C!
xoxox,
CC
wow, what beauty packed into one post!
how often do i travel? unfortunately, not that much, although i'd love for one day to see the world. i've always dreamed of living in a different country so i could embrace the culture and see how other people live.
xoxo,
Micaela
I love the open road and the lonesome motel. Traveling has been, for the largest part of my life, my only constant state. I was born into a family of wanderers, multilinguals, those who would not be tied down. From six months after my birth, we began traversing the country in our old British Khaki landrover, and then the oceans. We moved every two years like clockwork - different states, different countries. Spring and fall would find us on the road again, camping, roaming, looking for a new place to alight. Only very recently have I had to give up my rambling ways...at least to an extent. It's OK - I'm learning new things about life. But I will roam again.
wow that is such a great post! i've just discovered ur blog and amazed with this :D
hmm i'm kinda love travelling cause i think there's always something i can learn from that travlling. maybe the place, the food, culture, etc and i hope can do more and more
this year's trip is to bandung only in january. havent been to somewhere far this year
Finally back!!
beautiful post<3
Btw here is my link, to my new blog <3 check it out ;)
xoxo L.
The purpose of traveling would always have to be the journey itself, were in getting lost, one would be found.
Loved this post and loved to have you back as much as I love traveling. This year I am going to Costa Rica, I want to get lost in the jungle ;)
And for the winter I am planning to take my car and drive all my way to SFO and then back... or maybe never drive back at all.
Hugs!
I would love to just take off and travel,
exploring all the places I have never been, and re-visiting the few gorgeous places I have.
oh u write so beautiful!! I am right now in one of those rough places in this thing called life... and your posts makes me think and see that there is hope, and there is other places to go and other ways to go about things. I hope to experience a good travel soon, maybe far away, or maybe just around the corner that i never really paid attention to, but now can find beautifull.
Looking forward to your next post!
Thank you. It was really fun there, but a bit cold (I was on skiing holiday). You're blog is nice! xx
I'm so happy you stopped by, S-C. I was actually just thinking about you the other day. :]
I'm really happy to see you still blogging as well. And yay for size 8, we can share our shoes now!! xx
Hey you're back! Missed you and your lovely posts =) Hope everything's ok!
Travelling has been on my mind lately, I think I'm going to make a trip, just me and my sister, should be fun! I just love seeing new places and the memories you have when you get back :)
And these pictures are absolutely gorgeous, amazing, love them!
I'm so glad you have posted again... you always seem to add a little extra something to your posts... something unidentifiable, but very much appreciated.
beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. you have me yearning for summer road trips.
i really must read this blog more often, it makes me so happy.
Darling I've been missing your blog terribly, and this was just what I needed :)
Reading this post made me think of Kerouac, and how after I read On The Road I was convinced that I do the same as him.
I absolutely adore to travel - though with my parents it usually is at a gorgeous resort or hotel. I enjoy just escaping away somewhere, no matter how nice or dingy the experiences are what makes traveling worthwhile.
You're wonderful, darling. And I'm so glad you posted again!
Oh, and the photographs are absolutely STUNNING.
oh my GOSH finally.. we have MISSED you
joy division atmospheric photos
you're back!
everyones traveling to me so i cannot wait till i can just leave
Wow, I just found your blog through Uber Origional, and I have fallen in love! I love love love the photographs posted on here, and you have just given me so much inspiration for one of my collections I'm designing for an assesment at my college.
Much love from Australia,
Kara xoxo
I feel the need to leave it all behind and travel the world almost every day... Sadly, this i an unrealistic thought =[
Beautifully written, Li~
Sometimes I just want to run away too...I'm loving what I do now but I don't see the chance of doing any serious travel for a few years at least. I would LOVE to go to Europe - never been there and am dying to go...
i don't travel nearling enough! i have no money! so sad. i love this post! it makes me want to grow wings and fly! love the shot with the candles especially :)
thanks so much for your comment doll! every time i visit your blog i am never let down..keep up the amazing work hon.
love LM xxx
Oh, lovely, lovely post. Traveling is my greatest passion and pleasure on this earth. I chose my college for its study abroad program and managed to spend whole semesters in Japan and Greece. I swear it's my parents fault since I was born to a Romany lifestyle of moving every three years. I can't stay in one place for longer and lately even 2 years feels too long...
As your post said, you learn so much from the places you visit--about the world and yourself. There's so much to see and I want to see it all--I want to swallow the world!
How much traveling have you been able to do? Where have you gone? Where would you like to go?
this post made me wanna jump straight in the car and just take off...I dream about that a lot! One day I am going to get better and go see this world...one day :D
I've missed your posts so dearly!!!!
to just take off and travel on a whim would be delightful. if i ever come to the states in the future, let us do a road trip. wooooooo!
WONDERFUl and lovely!!
:)
How often do I travel? As often as possible! I think you only truly begin to know yourself when you travel. I love the fact that it takes you out of your regular routine. I recommend travelling alone - much more frightening and stressful at times, but also so much more fulfilling in the end. But I do have to say that I LOVED being in Paris with my ballerina man :)
As usual, (and I know I say this all the time) beautiful post.
SC i missed you and your beautiful post!
now that i think of it, i don't really travel much, and i kinda regret it.. being locked under the studies and school.. i need to see the world.
how are you? i wish you all the best!
How do you ALWAYS put into words and perspective what's currently on my mind??? I've been feeling the urge to be a nomad... just coming and going as I please... gypsy if you will. Can I repost some of your words on my blog with a link back to you of course?
I want to go to Helsinki and Paris...and Milan.. I have traveled a lot as a child, but now I only go to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to see my father :(
ohh i missed your words and beautiful photos!
everybody agrees on me, you are so lovely!
so many wonderful ideas in just one mind:)
have a nice day!
my sister (who i run my blog with) and i are going overseas together later this year. we're going to live out of backpacks the size of ourselves and probably survive off bread and water because we won't be able to afford anything else.... but i think it will be wonderful and i'm so excited to get out and see the world.
/maisie #2
ps. judging by your blog (which i'm so happy to have discovered!) i think you would *definitely* enjoy 'the dreamers'. make it the next film you seek out. you'll thank me. xx
What a delight to find you. You feel like a kindred soul. To me travel is essential, it is what centers me. Destination is not important, the important thing is to move.
i've just come across your blog and i love it!

you know when i went travelling to see some concerts last week, i realised i haven't done anything like that in ages. it felt so good. i need to do it more often:)

i missed my daily deep thinking.

forever,
Mila.
i don't travel a lot at all. of course i wish i could travel more.
thanks for the pictures and the comment :)
Now I want to travel! great post, great pics
C.
again, i love this.
in response to your comment: that particular concert (the ben kweller one) was pretty expensive relative to the other concerts i see. i try to make a habit of seeing concerts that cost $20 or under. music is an important part of my life, so i think it's worth that extra $$ to see a favorite musician live! plus, it's so much fun to go with friends. and i generally prefer standing-only venues, so that i can dance! :)
wow~ cool!
thanks for your
lovely comment, susannah~
i'm so glad!
*bisous*
really beautiful pictures. thanks for sharing, your blog is lovely!
ohh thank you so much, you're always kind and you have this amazing energy around:)
my site will be ready soon and when it will be ready i would love you to have an account on it:)
until then i wish you only love and good moments!
xoxo Gia
Traveling is my biggest joy, and never fails to make me happy. Even the very time I spend in a car, on an airplane or train is always special.
Your writing is precious. Adding you to my faves <3
Ohh, I love your pictures! :)
Keep on going! ;)
I have missed you posting, good to see another great write up. I love to travel, wish i can travel more than i do now.
ps:about your comment on my post: i went crazy about the warm weather, i felt like a hyper child lol. OMG, you are damn too fun at getting into your car via the window :) I do forget to put my car on park too, it even happened today lmao
have a lovely weekend sweety!

Thanks for answering (yeah my pink converse probably won't stay as clean as they are right now wither lol), just added your blog to our blogroll. I've said it before but I'll say it again: your blog is amazing. i love how it combines poetry and photographs! xox
Hey SC! I missed you TONS! where have I been? *rawr*
I really love the title for this post-- it is very very true. :-)
As for travelling.. I do love to travel.. overseas or just around the city. Its the closest thing I have to actual meditation. Totally clears my head of anything that might be bothering me and often times, it offers new perspective as well.
xx

These pictures are absolutely incredible!
aaaaah you're back! finally! hope things are well with you :)
lovely post as always. very beautiful pictures. travel ey? i think i travel every 2 years or so. but it's always to asia. i have never been to europe but i would love love loveeee to go! and i shall. haha when i have more money :D
hm..have never been on a roadtrip before either! must definitely do that at some point!
Beautiful. Your posts never fail to make one sit down and really think. :)
wooooow your pics still are perfect... so clear, i lovin that!
x
You're back! Lovely picutres. I don't think I travel enoough. I always travel with family. I think traveling with friends would be alot more fun.
Another one of your brilliant works!
I've always loved traveling, even before I could afford it I would travel in my mind ( spent hours daydreaming) and then it happened! I've been to a lot of places in the States, Canada and Europe and I feel like I've only started exploring the world, because there is SO much to see! So many interesting people to meet, it is just mind blowing!
They say if you haven't traveled anywhere, then you haven't really lived. I can to some degree agree with that statement. Traveling changes you as a person, it gives you a broader view of how no matter where you are in the world , people are ALL THE SAME!
I wish one day for the world to have no borders, so people can travel anywhere!
xoxo
Mimi

Bisous,
La C.
i havent traveled since I was 17. and its coincidential that I was thinking about how I want to travel somewhere overseas before I came to your blog.
I want to go to France or England. Those two places are at the top of my list.
It seems my sub-conscious types your blog's address everytime I need some guidance, some inspiration, some faith.
I can see why.
This post came in perfect timing for me, S-C. More than ever, all I can think about is to run away, make my dreams finally happen.
I want New York. I want anywhere in the US or Canada. Something an ocean away from this lonely place.
I simply adore your way of writing. You have a true gift to choose the right words combined with the wisdom of a dreamer.
Do you think you got room for me in your Volvo? I'll only take a small suitcase and a set of books, CDs and DVDs with me, I promise :)
And thank you for the comments you leave me. They mean the world to me.
Hope you had a nice weekend,
Raspberry
Hey S-C!! How have you been? Great post!! :D

wow! very interesting story! the pictures are amazing!
travel used to be my passion until 9/11. now airport security is just ridiculous and the seating is super crowded....just not the same.
anyway...glad to have u back! :)
wow!85 comments!
i might spend my lifetime to reach that popularity. haha.
love your post!
the photos are awesome.
That first paragraph kind of reminded me of "Brokeback Mountain". I don't know why, but it did.
For your wanderlust, I recommend you read "The Lost Continent" by Bill Bryson. He travelled all of the USA too and the book is perhaps more funnily than poetically written, but I think it's awesome reading.
And my song recommendation for you today is "Road Trippin'" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The idea of a road trip is really awesome. I would like to travel like you had described, and I wouldn't even need friends to go with me - I'd make friends on the way!
I hope you realise this dream of yours this summer!
Sleeping in a car must be cool too...
I once heard that when you completely lose track of time, is when you're truly relaxed.
I travel quite often. We have holidays four times a year (from school), and I spend three of these holidays travelling. I like it very much, and I do wish to travel more. So far I have only been in countries where I have relatives, and I want to see some foreign countries too. Right now I'm dreaming of going to Finland, because I have a penfriend there who I want to meet, but I would alswo like to go maybe to Singapore. My uncle has been there and told me about it, and his stories were wonderful.
I don't know if traveling has taught me anything about myself, but it certainly gives a good insight into other cultures if you travel abroad.
Kisses and Hugs,
Cate
awww.. you are back!
well,, I don't travel a lot,, but i do love exploring new places in HK, some old districts as well. you never know who/what you will meet during the journey, and all the possibilities out there keep me exploring and never get tired of the idea.
If i am a given a free air ticket, I would love to fly to the Middle East, everything there is just soo exotic, their culture/people/food/history have always attracted me deeply. and of course, the simplicity of life there too :)
Best wishes,
agnes xx
wonderful pics!
such an incredibly lovely find! this, your blog! just love it

these words resonate so much with me, currently on the verge of leaving academic drudgery behind, if only for a week to road trip southwards. i dream of going west one day, though. lovely, lovely post, as always.
Hi my sweet, what a mindblowing post!! Ok i was ready to pack in my job (as much as i love it ) and reach for my very battered suitcase and just go wherever i end up! You were born to write sweet S!
Honestly one of my fave posts to date. I have such a wanderlust! i dream of muscat, maldives, fiji, antigua, thailand, paraguay, cuba, haiti and the list goes on and on! You have so inspired me to travel far more often and without rhyme or reason. They say the best experiences are spontaneous and on whim!
I am glad your background in web design is helping with your online venture. I'm so happy that it is going well. I know it will be success,if there is anyway i can help do let me know!
This post has reminded me that it's not the destination that counts but the journey and the experiences we have on it.
stay blessed my sweet.
Marian.
this is such a lovely post, S-C ;)
i've miss you, your gorgeous photos and your wise, wise words
bisous!

"anonomity to a drifting soul"
That sounds perfect. Being able to constantly reivent and discover oneself wherever you go. No one knowing who you were yesterday. Just evolving.
Someday I think it might be nice to live on a boat and dock wherever I can to explore before heading out again.
i want to travel more... travelling is amazing i feel like it really helps you figure out who you are! Great photos :)
Take to the road indeed. Nothing like an adventure far away from home. I guess that's why I love stories of journeys (Lord of the Rings tops the list!). Journeys always change you, and make you long for home at the same time.
This post is wonderful. I still want to do that, just travelling without a plan. I think that would be the best journey ever!
Oh, you make me daydream.
Lovely post, as always. I've never wanted to go on a road trip more in my entire life!
lovelylovely! so inspiring
ohh you have such a beautiful page! lovelyyyy
these photos are amazing. Your blog is amazing! y-s x
I'd love to be able to travel more. There are so many things you learn in other countries, but what's most important in my opinion is that travelling broadens one's horizons. You start seeing everything in a different way.
Wonderful pictures!
This is the first time, that I visit your blog. I wish that I'd discovered it sooner. It's inspiring and just what I needed. Thank you

mesmerized
by yr blog
Ah I love photos that have tongues sticking out :P
One really lovely journey I like to think of (my birthday present when I turned 11) was a train journey across the great rift valley in an old steam engine. My mom an I travelled 3 days through various national parks and landscapes. When we arrived in Dar- es-salaam I remember how everything was so very different from home (that time I lived in Zambia) and how everything smelled of the ocean and the port (meaning fish). We picked seashells and went to a hall where slaves used to be sold a long time ago. It was creepy, but also full of life (it's a regular market hall now) and the town was so crowded and they were selling all sorts of stuff. That's something I can never forget. Thinking back and rembering it through my eyes as a child it's like something from a dream. On the train itsself we met a couple of people from allover the world simply backpacking and exploring, probably learning about life. That's something I'd do again anytime.
I love your blog so much you don't even know. You always get me thinking and remebering and I've got a new url btw.
thanks so much! i am so excited for you to receive it. i knew you (like i) are inspired by their work so thought i'd send the info your way.

"Take a battered suitcase. Take any vehicle that runs"
Genius advice! Go go go! Don't look back, it's like diving into a cool pool – that umming and ahhing, you know it will be fine once you're submerged, a bit of a sharp breath in, some goosebumps perhaps, but you ponder and all kinds of excuses come from the recesses of your mind. Where the hell do those excuses even come from! It's amazing. But leap. That's when you feel truly Alive.
Love the images for this post.
Hope all is well <3
Ooooo I love the second, third, fourth and fifth pictures!!!!!!
Hope you're well!!!
