27 April 2009

"Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength."

Our home, this universe is blackened beneath the shroud of hatred and loathing, disgraced, distorted with slander, sharpness, and scorn. This world, needs no more hate, needs no more brashness, biting bitterness that leaves teeth marks on the soul, and traces of tears on flesh.

Gentleness is a master of tempers, a treatment for broken hearts, and broken people. A remedy for war, for witless assault, aggression of the human spirit.

Gentleness is my grandmother's fragile footsteps, arriving on the brick porch, lighter than air, the delicate lilt of her voice; soft murmuring and melodies on the radio, crawling through the pint-sized speakers, like sunbeams; the pale moon suspended over an iridescent lake, in the hollow of a forest asleep; sea foam, candle light, a whisper in the night, a mother's lullaby, summer breezes, bliss, a goodnight kiss.

If civilization were to classify gentleness as a gender, it would be female, as it is chiefly regarded by the male as frailty, a fault, a consequential mark in character.

It is past due, though, that the masquerade ends, for a grand finale with gentleness, a theater production, where the ruby red curtains in all their velvet strung glory are parted to unveil that the falsely masked gentleness is in truth a character of refined strength.

Gentleness indeed is not a riddance of strength, but an exercise of strength.

Harsh tones are wind in the wildfire of oppression and brutality. Thereupon, let us embrace a gentle nature, thoughtful with our tones, selective in what we let slip from our tongues. Extend a hand to hold, a smile to bless, an embrace to savor, even for a stranger.

Gentleness is but a wing in the flight of love, and love, faithful love, can redeem this blackened world.

I think that we all fall somewhere in the middle...for the most part I think that I am a "gentle" person but of course the snappy, quick to react person sometimes rears it's not-nearly-as-pretty head. either way, thank you for asking the question and for making it part of our discussion...this post was the best way to start my daily blog reading. happy monday:)

I think I am a gentle person and I only snap at people sometimes, I mean what girl doesn't? Gentleness to me isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength and compassion. It's being able to accept people for who they are and being able to love. And being a loving and compassionate person are two of the best personality traits ever. (:

Hey S-C,

I would say gentleness ends in kindness shared thru maurity :O). We are only gentle when we feel safe, and secure within our own skin. If not then only fear can bring out a side of anger/snappy in order to protect oneself. I think that's how I become most times

...I'm nice when I feel secure, but become guarded and slighty annoyed when I don't feel safe in a situation.

Oh, I'd say gentleness is a form of strength. It requires restraint from jumping to conclusions, restraint from looking at things through only a personal lens rather than recognizing how your actions affect those around you. Lashing out is easy and instinctual, so yes, the quote is spot on.

And way to go, you, getting all those followers! I was relentless in getting you to start up a tumblr, and yet I only have 20 or so followers! Yours is well-deserved, of course - you always have such great things to share.

Gentleness wins hands down. And it is a most underrated trait, come to think of it. Do we, men, tend to see gentleness as 'frailty'? Some do, surely, but others ride on its crest, allowing the soft waves underneath to transport us to kinder grounds. I belong to the latter.

Many thanks.

Greetings from London.

It definitely takes strength to be gentle. It's so much easier to push away with anger and fear, than to bring nearer with courage and gentleness. So practicing gentleness is my motto. It sounds like it is for you too!

Have a lovely day!

I just adore the title to this post. So true and so very beautiful.

I admit that I used to be a lot more of a snappier, hot-headed person than I am now. I'm not sure exactly what changed within me but I am now so much more relaxed, calm, peaceful and quiet. I am always drawn to other gently, calm souls, although I do love my crazier friends! :)

I quite agree gentleness is read as a weakness by our society. I often come across as "mean" and "cold" to people I first meet, but I'm the most loyal and loving person to people that get into my inner circle. Other friends are outwardly gentle and sweet, but they drop you like hot potatoes at the first whiff of trouble...my gentleness is genuine but it is definitely buried under a rocky exterior due to childhood bullying and such. I don't mind it too much...I can deal with people thinking I'm cold if it means they won't try to intimidate or hurt me.

Tuesdai Noelle i think was very right in saying that "We are only gentle when we feel safe, and secure within our own skin"
I would say this is me almost all of the time now. I have come to a point in my life when I'm starting to get rid of anyone or anything that doesn't allow me to feel safe and secure...and it feels good!

Once again thank you so much for bringing thoughts that I have brewing deep down to the surface and putting them into words (not to mention beautiful pictures). You truly do have a gift.

What a gorgeous & visually stunning post!

From Wikipedia:

"Gentleness is a value and quality in one's character. Being gentle has a long history in many, but not all cultures.

Gentleness can be viewed as a refinement of character; in difficult times, a thoughtful approach can serve as a model for others; when one thinks only of oneself, and not also of others, then it is easy to hurt others unintentionally."
That is SO true, I view myself as a gentle person, quite often putting others interests above mine, which is often seen as a sign of weakness, is not always appreciated, and may sometimes result in me getting hurt by others. I think a lot of strength is required to be gentle, and won't change because of others...

Wow a deep sigh was exalted reading through this post. I think this one was one of the more potent for me because I'm been feeling really frail lately.

So in saying this I think it is a weakness moreso than a strength. Empathy which in some cases is a deriviative of 'gentle spirits' as you've put it is a virtue and one that is a positive for the individual BUT means there is more base for attack by others if you know what I mean. Like you're opening your soul up to feel more sad than is really necessary but you do so because you have a stronger consious for certain causes.

Nice post! :D

*sigh* there are times when I wish I were a bit more gentle.. but most of the time, my aggressiveness is the one that comes through. This happens even with the slightest of triggers, say, "a piece of advice given during one of my sensitive days".

I do agree that gentleness is a sign of strength and not weakness. It takes a lot to maintain that grace under today's pressures.

I LOVE these images! Your words are as beautiful as ever.
Some people say I come across as being "gentle", I guess it has something to do with being naturally shy and my cultural background (apparently my hometown in Indonesia is well-known for it's people being very polite and soft-spoken, which is not always true, but it does play a role).
However, having said all that, the people closest to me knows that I can be extremely harsh too - which I'm not proud of.

elusive_elfin said...

As usual, amazing photos (I shouldn't even bother saying it anymore ...broken record and whatnot!)

I'm definitely a snappy person. My reactions are very much in the moment, so if someone annoys me or says something I don't agree with, I tend to react without thinking! Then, nearly immediately, I'll feel guilty if I know it was uncalled for and will apologise!

I do wish I was a bit more gentle in my manner. I'm a practical person and very blunt, and most of my friends would come to me for advice or help because they know I'll be very direct with them, and won't mess about trying to spare their feelings, which I think is a good thing.

However, I do find I'd like to be naturally gentle when it comes to people like my boyfriend, who has started to refer to me as Snappy the Turtle!lol!
