In December, the crinkle of antiquarian Christmas music, the bewitching baritone of Nat King Cole, the palliative tenor of Frank Sinatra, tranquilizes the white heat of my temperament. For a fistful of time, maps are no longer luring, with all their inscribed invites to escape; the prominent, primitive recklessness I feel in all other seasons is as quiet as snowfall.

Mainly it's the merry melodies, the impregnating of possibilities. But then there's the shimmer and twinkle of tiny lights, encompassing tinsel and trees, strung like the hopes of humans, brittle bulbs of brightness. The carolers that come in clarity of candlelight; the hallowed hush of the snowdrifts; the flush of the fire; the scent of cinnamon and pine.

The peppermint candlesticks set on windowsills, Christmas films, and Christmas stories, the papered parcels put under the tree, topped with velvet bows. The ethereal echo of the cathedral choir, the Christmas Eve ceremony unfolding under the afghan of winter stars. And from all, comes a contentedness, so tender, that I feel I might cry, might crumble from it all.

I am flecked with flaws, missteps, misgivings, immeasurable idiosyncrasies, irresponsibility; a rebel, and a runner. I have a tongue too hasty; a will that never wafts, even in the whip of the wind. I dream, and I wish, and I hope. I believe.

As intricate, and dissimilar, as we may be, we all need something to believe in. Be it Saint Nicolas, and his sleigh, his fleet of flying reindeer. Be it a king borne in Bethlehem, beneath the heavens, the son of God. Be it good will, good deeds, justice, joy. Be it humanity, or a happily-ever-after. Be it all.

My dear, do not forsake faith, for without it, fear will arise, in its absence, and grow, in its vacant place. When wonder seems to have strayed, search for it beneath the staggering stack of sobriety, brush it off, and tuck it into the enveloping fold of your heart. Believe.

Happy holidays! May your hearts be merry and bright!

Nothing makes me happier than Christmas time. Everyone is just happy and frantic, there's so much joy in the air and it's just a great excuse to spend time with my family. I think i love it so much because of the traditions we have and because i am so close to my family. I'm so excited about it!!
you always managed to write such poetic post with starling images!!! simply love it ... i am still waiting for the snowfall here - reckon it will happen sometimes soon :-)
xx
I have to admit, I have no attachment to Christmas as I never grew up with it and I'm Jewish. I appreciate the pretty things about it though: the idea of getting together with your family for feasting, the lights and the general festivity. But I do wish it wasn't so commercialised as everything meaningful about it becomes lost in consumerism. A naive wish, I know.
Anyway, I celebrate Hannukah, my favourite Jewish holiday.
Hope you are well lovely girl and taking good care of yourself!
Lovely pictures!
Adorable! The photography is also stunning!
Thanks for visiting my blog, I adore yours :)
Happy Holidays for you too!
Love,
Giovanna

Lovely, and heart-wrenching.
Your writing is as always, immaculate. (:
I wish you the best through the holidays, and I can't believe I identify my own emotions with yours.
I feel those same feelings, but I take them out in different ways. Whether it be through a favorite song, sporadic doodles, tattered poems, or projects.

You described the season beautifully.
I celebrate Christmas.
My relatives are pretty close so my family (grand parents, aunts, uncles, cousins) all gather at my grand parents home. To everyone, it is a second home. I spent many days there as a child. My grandpa is an adventurer. When I was a child he would often request that my brother, my two cousins and I come over the night before a snow storm so we could spend days there sledding and walking in the woods. Once, it snowed at night and we went sledding under the stars.
In the past year God has made himself unshakably real to me.
Bless you, you adventurer with the Father's creative spirit.
Happy Holidays!

I'd LOVE to celebrate all (whatever that number may be) but guess I'll have to settle for Christmas (smile). Christmas for me is: A tall tree with random colored lights, a smile of peace and love for family, hot cocoa, "It's A Wonderful Life", laughing loudy while messing up Christmas carols, and burnt gingerbread cookies....just making the wishes that will travel and exceed the new year as a brilliant and new found adventure!
Sadly, I have none =( really....and I'm starting to think it's weird.
Your blog is absolutely beautiful. I love your words and these beautiful pictures. So glad you stopped by my blog...your comment led me to the beauty here. Be back soon! And enjoy the lovely holiday season.

Hi, I just found your blog, and I have to say it is the most inspiring one I have come across and also the one I can identify with most. I'm sure people say this all the time, but thank you for putting your writing out there, because I think you have the ability to analyze or explain or just put into words the hazy, half-formed thoughts and feelings I often have, but have never been able to articulate as beautifully and coherently as you have.
Also, I am at a point in my life where I have finally become a strong enough person to take my life in the direction that I think will fulfill me most, and unfortunately this has been very shocking and disturbing to my parents and some of my friends. I've been getting all sorts of disheartening comments and "advice", and people telling me I'm being impractical and should choose a more conventional, secure way of life. But I'm just so sick of being trapped in the seemingly endless and extremely tedious cycle of what is apparently a "normal life". Your blog has helped reassured me that I am in the right, and not a raving lunatic for being a dreamer. So I really found it in a time of uncertainty and vulnerability, and wanted to express my gratitude to you for creating such a lovely blog.
Dear Anonymous,
Aw, you're more than welcome, there's really no need to thank me, thank you for reading, and I'm so happy I could inspire you some.
I'm also happy to hear you're striving for the lifestyle you want, and not sacrificing your happiness to please others, though, sorry to hear about the disheartening comments, I know they can be frustrating and hurtful. Don't loose hope though, if always pays off, so to say, to do what you love, and embrace who you are. Best wishes! ♥
xoxo,
S-C
