In The Mood For Love
Fa Yeung Nin Wa
Hong Kong
2000
Dir. Wong Kar-Wai
This film is the palpable magic of director Wong Kar-Wai and cinematographer Christopher Doyle, a sensual waltz in 1962 Hong Kong. I drink in in like a cup of tea steeped and brewed into luscious, liquid robes of color, brushstrokes in lamplit shades. With a moody mysterious air that is simultaneously intimate and aloof, familiar and distant, Kar-Wai paints the picture of Mrs. Chan and Mr. Chow, neighboring lonely hearts whose spouses are in affairs. Gentle-tempered charm and gracefulness are orchestrated to Shigeru Umebayashi's masterful "Yumeji's Theme," as Chan and Chow quell their longings. The atmosphere, costuming, and sets, are exquisitely executed, breathtaking and achingly beautiful.
